Free Country!

Today I went to Subway for lunch, and before me was a 65-year-old black woman. For around two minutes, the Hispanic girl making the sandwich and the black woman ordering a sandwich had an unfruitful dialog over what type of vegetables to add. The black woman kept saying "tomatoes and olives, please" in a strongly-black accent and the Hispanic girl responding with confused looks ("We don't sell potatoes, ma'am").

I was fed up with waiting for them to reconcile this, so I said to the Hispanic girl: "She wants tomatoes and olives, please." So the girl puts them on. You would think that the black woman would thank me for resolving their deadlock, right? That's exactly the opposite of what happened.

She chided me: "This is a free country, boy. I am a free 64-year-old woman. I was born black but I was raised American. I make my own decisions. I don't want no kid like you making decisions for me."

Huh?

Immediately I flared back: "If you were raised American you wouldn't have this terrible accent that prevented a language-impaired worker from understanding you, and we wouldn't be having this conversation. Slavery was abolished over a century ago. Your mom had numerous years to teach you proper English." At this point, I wanted to say something like "But I forgot she never learned proper English herself" but I felt that that was too much, so I chose to end right there with "go away and let me get my sandwich."

And I turned around and said to the girl: "Oven-roasted chicken breast foot-long in honey oat bread, please."

I hate people who attack you for helping them. It's the most disrespectful thing that one can do.

so you only help black people

so you only help black people when it helps you.....that's my jingy ♥

Hey, that's when utilitarian

Hey, that's when utilitarian solutions are obvious :P

I side with neither of you,

I side with neither of you, but I have this to add:

Black people are not all bad. Both you and Engler seem to assume that's true by blanketing the entire African American population. Complaining about her accent is one thing -- but how about Chinese people? Sometimes we have terrible accents too and others can't hear us either. Granted her response was a little bit unwarranted, but your response I think was a little bit out there too. So she doesn't appreciate your actions: Let her burn.

What both of you people need to do is look at people on a case-by-case basis. Just because Black Woman A throws a tantrum because you aren't appreciated, does not mean that Black Man B is just as bad. And don't even go into the statistical debate. I'm not going to let you get away with that argument.

I described one isolated case

I described one isolated case in which her accent created a communication barrier that I kindly dismantled. From which statement of my post did you infer that black man B is just as bad? You need to stop being so judgmental and to see things for what they are.

I agree slightly with some of

I agree slightly with some of what Albert has to say, namely, you should just have let her burn and not said anything. Or given a more pithy response like, "If you're implying that I'm not American, then maybe I shouldn't have helped you get your sandwich," or some variant of "I helped you, therefore you shouldn't be pissed". It's far more mature, and frankly, that seems to be more the issue here, and that's where I agree with you: she had no right whatsoever to chastise you when you tried to help her. Those kinds of people rub me off the wrong way too. Bringing things like racial trauma into the argument only exacerbates the problem.

All things considered, however, I'm pretty sure she's burning right now anyway.

Yeah, I hate it when people

Yeah, I hate it when people imply that because I wasn't born here I deserve America less than they do. But hey, I was pissed. And people aren't really the most rational when they are not calm.

You don't deserve America...

... not. And I heartily agree with you about people not being the most rational when they are pissed. Cause of most of the problems in the world.

She shouldn't have

She shouldn't have chided you, but your response was as bad as what she said. You need to let people burn in their own fodder more often, Jinghao, otherwise you give them legitimate leverage to say more like what she said.

i wonder when you will become

i wonder when you will become less sheltered and grow up.

I would have gone with the

I would have gone with the Italian herb and cheese bread, but maybe that's just me.
