More signs that the US is screwed

What does it tell you when we care more about people outside our country than in? While crime rages in the inner cities, public education suffers, and the economy falters, we're giving money to those who aren't even citizens. Kind of makes you wonder what it means to be American.

take some soc classes

first of all, that's an overgeneralization; we obviously don't care more about the rest of the world than us. the USA will always act only if it sees benefits for itself. which is why we fight with the UN all the time, and we don't care so much about humanitarian issues that are ostensibly outside economic benefits/etc.

the fact is that America still suffers from racism and discrimination, which is why a disproportionate amount of blacks in the US are poor (it's not because they're lazy, or less smart, it's because they have decades upon decades of oppression in their history and are obviously thus not on an even footing with the rest of us). if you read about biopower, you would learn that modern governments don't put people to death to punish the population; instead, they ignore them, and just let them die off that way so they don't have to spend that much energy to wipe them all out actively. which is what happened with katrina.

and iraq isn't really outside our country; we invaded them. but we might see a new opportunity for the US in iraq, while we've abandoned new orleans. and there might be a sentiment of heroic (white) americans "saving" more "primitive" people in the "barbaric" middle east by bringing western values upon them. so there.

What's wrong with caring

What's wrong with caring about others? We invaded Iraq. We owe them this. We did not cause Katrina directly (although one may argue that our emissions increased ocean temperatures and hence the likelihood of hurricanes, and that bad management led to Katrina being a bigger disaster than it would have been), but we did cause the devastation in Iraq.

Say you robbed and pillaged a village, destroying it personally, and a tornado wiped out another village. Which one do you owe your help to more?

It is entirely selfish to assert that America is responsible for only itself when it chose to deploy "democracy" abroad.
