We both laugh at and feel sorry for them, but truly, how rare is the insanity that manifests itself in the form of homicide?
Me: I'm curious about the incident in the Bible in which Abram's God asks him to sacrifice his only son. What do you make of that?
Friend: It was the one thing that he held most dear--perhaps even above God? And so by being willing to give that up, he put God as the top on his values.
Me: But if a voice from high up above asks you to sacrifice your twin brother, would you?
Friend: Yes.
Me: If you did, civic laws will deem you insane; if you didn't--well, you'd be disobeying that voice
Friend: Yes, I'd be seen as insane.
I'm glad I don't live near him anymore.

That's definitely a part of the Bible that well... even the most sane would find downright weird.

If Abraham knew God well, he would've known from past experience that what he heard was from God. I don't think I would do so (what if it turns out that I had schizophrenia, or someone was playing a very mean prank on me?), but I do respect Abraham for his trust in God.
How can you determine
How can you determine whether you "know God well"? What if he had schizophrenia the first time he had voices, too? What if he accidentally (cough) inhaled some hallucinogenic drugs that made him envision something appearing in front of him?
Abraham and God established
Abraham and God established a covenant. So they would have a closer connection/"understanding" than you/any of us would.
That's a good point as well.

How can you be sure that the "covenant" is between you and a real entity? What if I establish a "covenant" with a "friend" whom I deem real but others don't see, and then that "friend" tells me to "sacrifice" someone I love?

Faith. That's how. Also, you deem Christianity or any other religion as a relationship with that higher deity. What you define your relationship to be is only under your terms. What others think is entirely up to them.

Therefore, under my definition of a relationship, I can justify my sacrificing a loved one, simply because "what you define your relationship to be is only under your terms" and "what others think is entirely up to them"? Clearly your logic is inherently flawed.

Go tell your girlfriend that then, because that's mostly the logic that Christians operate under.

If you aren't Christian, why do you choose to represent them and their views? Don't you think you're not doing their perspectives any form of justice?

I am basically reiterating my knowledge and what I have observed over the years. I am presenting the way I understand their way of thinking, much like you represent yours. It's not that I'm doing them no justice, I am merely looking at it how I see it and what others have told me. Go ask Tricia for more information. You seem quite intrigued.
